Description

Vinyl Got Soul Records, black vinyl, ltd 300, handnumbered, insert, CONTROL was formed by lead guitarist 'Sweet Phil' in '88 due to, depending on who you ask, either alcoholic dementia or his disgust with the prevailing hair metal bands of the late eighties. His vision being a return to the roots that made icons like Bon Scott-era AC/DC so much fun, with lewd lyrics, blaring amps, and an absence of pretension, spandex, or massive production values. He enlisted his longtime friends Scott Hultquist on drums, David Prescott on bass, and Craig Behrhorst (from RUFFIANS) on rhythm guitar, and set off in search of the ideal vocalist - preferably someone with suicidal tendencies, a complete disregard for decency, and pipes that could match the intensity of the music. The band found a kindred spirit in Michael Coons of LAAZ ROCKIT, who they convinced (some might say blackmailed) into fronting the band to rave reviews…and a slew of felony charges subsequently dropped due to witnesses abruptly disappearing. The band received interest from Megaforce Records, but they along with any other record company in its right mind wouldn't touch them for abundantly clear reasons. In return 'Baby Rack My Ball's (Tonight)' from the band’s first demo was often played as the intro to ANTHRAX's set on their '89 Head Bangers Ball Tour. Undeterred by lack of commercial success, groupies, or anyone but fat, loud drunks with names like "Peaches" willing to pay to see them perform ... They replaced Coons with Jay Taylor when Coons selfishly chose to tour Europe with LAAZ ROCKIT instead of living in squalor with his CONTROL bandmates. Taylor lasted until his liver cried uncle, and then Brian Crew joined the group in '90 for their final studio sessions. After several demos that resulted in brushes with interested labels, the group disbanded when it became apparent that moving to Seattle and developing a heroin addiction was the only way it would get any industry attention. Fast forward 25 years…these recordings are available on the bands debut LP 'Hellraiser' available on Vinyl Got Soul Records - May 2016.
